The Federal Public Program Service for Social Integration is a planning service of the federal government established in 2003 and led by the chairman of the management committee, Julien Van Geertsom.
Belgium took over EU Council Presidency on 1 July 2010. The Secretary of State for Social Integration, Philippe Courard, put three priorities under the Belgian presidency: the fight against child poverty, the need for a minimum wage and tackling homelessness. The FPPS Social Integration has been active for months preparing for the presidency. Numerous studies, conferences and activities will support the political process. The ultimate goal should be that everyone in Europe can lead a decent life. The Belgian Presidency of the European Union gives us a good opportunity to raise awareness for the need to combat poverty.
The fight against poverty and social exclusion is one of the EU's central objectives and our shared approach has been an important tool to guide and support action in the Member States. With the rattification in march 2000 of the Lisbon strategy, the European council encouraged the Member States and the European Commisson to take measures to eradicate poverty by 2010.
